Oil, oil sticks and acrylic on canvas
Sarah Muwanga's paintings explore what it feels like to share a space while being in completely different emotional and psychological places. Each figure sits within the same room but remains turned inward, caught in moments of reflection, routine or quiet withdrawal. Muwanga builds the work through layers of paint, creating an atmosphere where different lives, experiences and histories sit alongside one another. In the context of Gritted Teeth, her work reflects a quieter kind of endurance — the kind that often goes unnoticed. It speaks to the internal effort of holding oneself together, managing expectations, and moving through moments of disconnection under pressure.
