Textile, sculpture

Sally Hewett makes textile sculpture that takes the discomforts of women's clothing seriously as subject matter. Should Have Bought The DD began as a response to a particularly uncomfortable bra — one that seemed fine in the changing room but was a misery to actually wear. Hewett transforms that everyday experience of endurance into something visible and crafted, made from lycra, angelskin, foam padding and embroidery silk. Pixeltits arose when Instagram kept removing her posts for showing female nipples — apparently failing to notice they were embroidered. Rather than continue fighting the platform, she pixelated the nipples herself, turning an act of censorship into a deadpan gesture of creative control.
