Sound, mixed media

Kirsty Harris is a sound and mixed media artist whose practice draws on personal and political histories, particularly those of women in protest. You Can't Kill The Spirit is an audio composition created by layering the voices of women at Greenham Common — the anti-nuclear peace camp that became one of the longest-running acts of sustained civil disobedience in British history. The voices build into a polyphonic chorus: an incantatory roundel, a spell, a warrior's chant, an affirmation. The work is presented on a Sony Walkman from around 1987, the period when Harris was taken on CND demonstrations as a child — the object itself carrying the memory of the movement.
