Katie Surridge

Katie Surridge works in Roman-style marble mosaic, using the ancient language of tesserae to comment on very contemporary situations. Her Cheesy Chat Up Line Series adapts the catcall and the wolf-whistle into monumental form — figures rendered in black and white marble fragments, bodily and bold, set against the exposed brick of The Department Store. There is something deliciously awkward in Surridge's method: the painstaking, centuries-old craft of mosaic applied to the throwaway, disposable language of street harassment.
